Pretty Fighter X is a fighting game that was introduced at a time when 2D fighting games were more pure and dignified.
though no 2D fighting game possesses as much passion and heart like Pretty Fighter X does!

Info on the Old School SF Scene?

I was wondering what the SF scene was like way back in the days of SF2. It'd be cool if some of the older boys put down some of their memories. Actually I specifically wanted to ask about this dude Tomo. My friends say he used to play around where I live (so cal), and was generally regarded as the best 'round here. Hell, I might have gotten my ass kicked by him and not even known it back then. So my questions are: Why did he quit, and where the hell is he nowadays? I guess I can ask the same thing about Thomas Osaki, who also seems to be a god. But it'd also be nice if some of the newer gamers got to know how it was like back then.

THE EMULATION SPEED ISSUE.
There has been alot of debate about the running speed of HF under emulation. For those who don't know, HF runs faster than the origonal arcade board under emulation (within Mame & Winkawaks) this is because the speed of the game in HF was linked to the CPU speed of the board (or something like that). I have repeatedly timed the full round 'time out' matches of the tourney vids I'm posting, and the correct emulation using the fantastic old Callus Emulator. I've concluded that a round (going by when the clock starts & finishes) is around:
57 SECONDS
In both Mame and WinKawaks under normal settings a round will last approx
46.5 SECONDS
clearly a significant speed inrease, and 'very' noticable when played side by side. Thankfully there is an emulator (besides the fantastic but defunct 'Callus') that runs the game at the correct speed, 'nFBA'. For more info see ONLINE PLAY section at the top of the page for more info:

It seems their limiting it to only playable characters and I agree with some of the placements but this list is still way off. I know they pretty much just do this for fun, but off the top of my head........

Toki (HNK), Hilde (SC4), Zantetsu (LB2), Karnov (Karnov's Revenge), Raiden (KOF13), Zero(SvC Chaos), Karai (TMNT)

And there's a bunch of Naruto games with insanely OP banned characters. What do you guys think?

Street Fighter the Movie Broke My Heart

I just saw another post regarding Street Fighter the Movie.

I've been lurking on the Shoryuken forums for a while now. Each time this game comes up, I'm always tempted to post about it... but then I chicken out. I figure maybe now is as good a time as any. It's been over 10 years. Perhaps I should post before I forget too much.

Hopefully, what I am about to write does not qualify me for immediate banishment from the board. I have a confession:

I worked on Street Fighter the Movie. Arcade version.

I'm not going to post here and try to convince anyone that SFTM is any good. Clearly we all know where it ranks amongst the rest of the Street Fighter legacy. I just figured it might be fun for some of you to hear a little bit about the stuff that went on behind the scenes.

Any interest?

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is the ultimate fighting game of 2018! u heard it first here!extraxtreme

the ultimate of the ultimate! I played the beta for several hours and I was so surprised that the beta told me that it was over right up to last beta match I played! I didnt expect to play for the full length of the beta. was just expecting to play it like 1 hour, but played over 4 hours of it and it has ultimate potential and definitely the #1 pick for ultimate fighting game of 2018! Dissidia deserves its own ongoing series on PS4 and PS5. I always knew the series would have greater quality on console and I am right. while Duodecim has more depth in areas, the overall fighting in NT raises the standards with more accessibility, yet new depth that the classic Dissidia games don't have, especially with the revolutionary 3 vs 3 foundation (yes games like Xenoverse have 3 vs 3, but Dissidia NT actually has more technical skill based depth and team synergies instead of spamming). it also has 1 vs 1, but NT proves that Dissidia style combat is better with a 3 vs 3 format, plus it adds to the nostalgia from FF games that have a 3 member party in fights.

even the single player rush mode is addicting. even though there's no open overworld like Duodecim has, the Dissidia games were always weak in storytelling (some people even hate Terra's personality compared to how she was in FFVI. So better for Dissidia to focus on the fighting than storytelling, cause even the fans torn apart the plot of the PSP games and realized how dumb it was.)
as Street Fighter II has proven, a fighting game doesnt need a story or center on story to have a great game thats played over the generations. stories in fighting games are just an afterthought and the games really are evaluated on their gameplay, selection and gameplay related content (and we seen how Star Wars Battlefront 2 sacrificed a chunk of its budget for AAA story campaign production values, and see how that went. even Battlefront 1, which didnt have story, was better received).

well I can type all day about how great Dissidia NT's fighting system and 3v3 format is, though fighting fans can see the proof in the pudding, Dissidia NT is shaping up to a masterpiece, and the only area where it may be lacking, is dependant on which characters, how many, and how soon they will be added to the core game, cause we know there's still a lot of missing favorites, including the ones in Duodecim, so NT has a lot of expectations to deal with as well as beyond that. it is said they plan at least 50 characters for the game, perhaps they could surpass expectations in the total roster selection and overall quality picks for various tastes.

and yes Dissidia FF NT is a fighting game, a much greater fighting game than Power Stone games, SSB games, NSUNS series, and a lot of other fighting games combined!! sorry if that offends someone, but hey, OPINIONS!!

so while you think I'm insane, at least the mainstream FF fans and open minded Dissidia fans are loving it, so Dissidia Final Fantasy NT's qualities gotta be acknowledged.
and don't dare bring up shilling comments, cause you know I could stay quiet about my opinion and praise about it, and even in a scenario where if I happened to hate it,
Dissidia FF NT is STILL gonna sell like hotcakes, so there!!

I'm having somewhat of a hard time pulling off moves like hadouken and shoryukens, and etc with the snes classic controller. I mean, I can manage to do special moves at times and manage to win and all that but is that normal on the snes cart and snes classic? :\ Man, if so, it's frustrating. Any of you guys having the same problem? I might switch over to wii classic controller and give it a whirl on the snes classic.

For you who love games that play relatively similar to SF,CVS2 etc. but don't feel at home with SF4 or SFXT, here's a list of alternatives that may be fun for you:

Chaos Breaker
image
Can be bought on the JP PSN.
Click here for a guide to getting JP games easily
A very footsie/poke oriented western fantasy themed game with many unique and cool mechanics.

You pick up to 3 characters (KOF style team battles) and an item, which provides you an effect when used and access to a unique super. Or you can pick less characters but more items. The forward dash clashes with non-low moves which turns it into a parry of sort. IIRC you can spend meter to call your team mates as assists. Lots of cool shit.

Shin Koihime Musou Arcade Edition

image
It's out now on PC, and soon on PS3.
This game is extremely similar to SF2, but with assists, EX moves, and fatal counters.
I made a tutorial long ago:
image

Aquapazza

Out on JP PS3 but coming very soon to America with a very cheap price tag.
image
This game plays like a cross between CVS2 and Capcom Fighting Jam. Each character has its own system of rules to play within, but the assists can provide additional groove like features. Like for example one of the singer assist activates a genei jin for your character, and the other activates a seiei enbu. The emotion system heavily rewards offensive play, functioning as both a guard break system and gives bonuses for the attacker.

I will add more later.

The FGC is a very rich place with Three distinct Eras in the community. We have the Early Fighting game era which i see from the Early days of Street Fighter 2 to the Final days of SF3 third Strike. Next to follow the Era comes to the Quiet Era, which though had Great games, it was relatively Small from MvC2 to Tekken 6. Finally We have the Modern Era which is what we have now. You can play through the Early age with Fightcade, and Play through the Modern age with Steam, However with the Quiet era of the MvC2s, CvS2s, Melty Blood, and more, there was no way to play these games...Until Now, I have went into Work and created a website and community, with a easy step by step set up process, download packs, and extensions to play these games again.
This Website is called: www.fgcarcadia.byethost14.com
With FGC arcadia, you a provided the game of your choice in a community we can build together to play our favorite games again, without the need of a great PC. We host 40 games on oursite with provided emulators from some notable names like.
-Marvel vs Capcom 2 -Capcom vs Snk 2 -The King of Fighters XI -Tekken 5DR -Soul Calibur -Melty Blood -Virtua Fighter 4 -Akatsuki Blitzkampf -The Rumble Fish -Tatsunoko vs Capcom -Project Justice Rival Schools -Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 -Street Fighter 4 Vanilla
And many more Legendary games!
Q&A
Do I need a Gaming Computer? -No! The highest game on our list requires an I3!
Is all of this free? -Absolutely!
Im not good at setting up emulators! - No worries! Everything is preconfigured and set up!
I Heard that Kaillera is unstable! -There has been alot of Discussion about Kaillera and Misconceptions of its connectivity. Kaillera 1v1 through servers can be Quirky, However this isnt the Case for Kaillera p2p. Kaillera p2p is what we will be using and it has always been proven to be very smooth in multiple tests that Friends and I have run. In combination with Hamachi, Kaillera Runs Amazing and does very well, I feel like people really Misunderstood Kaillera back in the day.
My goal in this is to build a community and preserve This middle era of the FGC. I also want to Inspire a rich scene to revive fan favorite games and play it together!
So Visit FGC Arcadia and start playing your favorite Arcade games again online!

Mega Archive of Pre-03 Crash SRK threads.

To those who dont know, there was a complete SRK forum crash in 2003, wiping out pretty much everything, ..every thread, every post...
Just recently after trawling thru my archive, I've finaly managed to find every pre 03 crash thread I'd saved, sorted them into respective game folders and hosted them up here to download.
There are literaly 100's of threads, many dating back to the very begining of the SRK forums. The majority are for MvsC2, for which there are over 300! (this was THE big game of the times), tho there are quite a few for other games too.
I imagine much of the info they contain may be outdated in this age of matchvids and Japanese translations, but there may also be a fair amount of lost knowlege, and certainly alot of 'historicaly' interesting stuff...

So here it all is, enjoy:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hb_51JbGhBubdeXKlqD_KoOWu56CTE-N/view?usp=sharing

*most of the threads are saved as .txt files of the 'show printable version' 'all posts on one page' type. Sadly this was shortly before I discovered the joys of .mht documents.
*some threads are .txt files saved directly from the forum view, so can be a little trick to read, but everything is in there.

EDIT
Great to see that this stuff means as much to other people as it does to me.
Massive thanks to everyone for the Rep, pls leave Ur names when reping because I dont know who to thank. Just looking through again, I noticed that one of the few sorting mistakes I'd made was that the big plot thread called:
"Forums - The Warrior Tales Storylines of SF (Q & A thread).txt"
was put in the 'MvsC2' folder instead of the 'Plot etc' folder. This was the biggest thread thread in the whole archive, and no doubt a product of many years painstaking research, so worth singling out I feel.

I'm sure I'm not the only geek here who plays guitar. Anyone else tried playing their favorite tunes from any games?

I'm gonna post some tabs. Maybe someone else can do the same or request some.

Just learned Ken's theme recently from this tab, and am working on MegaMan3 intro. Original SF theme is cool too.. everytime i play it I can still remember that white dude punchig the black guy in the face. If you can find the acoustic remix of MM3 Intro on the net somewhere, you should check it out.. it's awesome.

US SF's 'Golden Era' & best_ever player!? [TOMO NOW COMING TO EVO 09!!]

Undoubtedly the greatest Street Fighter player the US ever produced, Tomo Ohira, is almost fergoten by the SF scene today. Tomo Ohira was the Daigo of his day, a world famous player during the height of Street Fighter's 'Golden Era'. All the way back in 93, well before we had even heard of the internet, even the small SF scene in my English home town knew abt Tomo. I still remember first reading the interview with him in the back of the GamePro SF2: Hyperfighting guidebook.

In todays thriving competetive SF scene, with its huge online community, world tournaments and plentiful video footage, its a great shame that western SF's Golden Era and its greatest ever player, Tomo, are so little known.

What is needed more than anything else is footage of Tomo and other great players at the pinacle of the Hyperfighting scene. This was the absolute zenith of oldschool StreetFighter skillz. Hyperfighting at its peak was as thrilling as todays Japanese ST scene. Fast and tactical, with many fergoten abt beast like Shoto killing TAP Rog, Vert Ball Blanka & Low Lariat Geif all up there battling with the trad top tier of Ryu, Guile and Sagat. And in a time before Supers, Hyperfighting was the highpoint of oldschool combo skill, with amazing, high damage, re-dizzy & 'CPS1 Chain' combos the likes of which are rarely seen in super_move focused ST.
To the olsschool players out there harbouring these nuggets on dusty VHS tapes under thier beds, please share it with the community.

It would also be cool if SRK did an interview with Tomo and other great players like Jeff Schaefer (who's recent Hyper SF2 comback challenge against Daigo was a great missed opportunity for a history lesson in Oldschool skills) or invited them to make a guest appearance at Evo, giving out the prizes.

Crayfish.

EDIT: Well 4 years on from this thread and it seems like Tomo may be making an appearance at Evo 09! I don't know if Tomo will have any official/ceremonial position as I had proposed above, but it seems he may be making an appearance in some for or another. Tomo's long time friend Mike Watson has started a thread here to test the waters to see if there is enough interest. Ofcouse you all want to meet Tomo no? Get over there:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=176784

EDIT EDIT:
He didn't phisicaly come, but he 'was' there, thanks to Mike:

Vanguard Princess: Happy 5th anniversary!/eigoManga SUCKS - Now on Steam

VANGUARD PRINCESS
Last update: 03/03/2014

What is Vanguard Princess?

Vanguard Princess is a FULLY FREEWARE Doujin (Homebrew/Indie) 2D fighting game created by a single guy called Sugeno who was released on June 30 2009. The style of the game is a wacky combination between "old skool mechanism" and assist support, all combined with the "all-loved by SRK" loli characters! ANIME!. VP was created on Fighting Maker 2nd, a Japanese "fighting engine" just like MUGEN but with a lot of more support and possibilities. You can read the Readme.txt of the game translated to English here (thx jumpAlice!).

Holy mother of fuck, this game is fucking beautiful!

Indeed!, this game got a lot of attention because of his pretty awesome sprite work and backgrounds. According to Canned Dogs Sugeno was "supposedly an ex-capcom employee as according to what people have managed to dug up about him", this hasn't confirmed yet anyway, but still...

So what requirements i need?

Very, VERY low specs:

OS? MS - Windows 98/Me/2000/XP Japanese Edition (or Japanese Locale).
CPU ? Pentium III 400MHz.
Memory? 128MB.
HDD? 400MB Free Space,?DirectX 7 required.

(thx jumpAlice!)

So this shit is Freeware? URL plz!!111

You got it:

LATEST VERSION:
- 1.08 (Official link)

Older versions:

- 1.04 Patch for 1.03b
- 1.03b
- Unofficial 1.03b "english" version (thx Saikyou)
- Version 1.02
- Patch for 1.02 that corrects Natalia bugs (thx someAZdude)
- Unofficial version 1.02 without need for Japanese support (thx Saikyou)
- Version 1.01
- Unofficial version 1.01 without need for Japanese support (thx Saikyou for this).
- Unofficial version 1.01 with Hilda unlocked for play (thx Garzahd for this).
- Version 1.00

I heard there is an "American" version of the game, it is true?

Yes, the game was translated in English by eigoManga but is now a commercial software. You can grab it at GamersGate and now on Steam since March 2014. It was slighty censored but now Hilda is playable and as far as i know she is not broken.

What is the "latest version" and the current status of this game?

Latest official Japanese version of Vanguard Princess is 1.08, released on January 14 2011.

Since August 2011 Sugeno hasn't updated his Blog, the status of the whole game is now unknown. The American company eigoManga has bought the official licence and translate the game on English. There is no info about an upcoming "Prime" version for now.

Help! the game doesn't start on my PC

Japanese version of Vanguard Princess NEEDS your Windows regional configuration for non-unicode programs in Japanese. For change that go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Administrative -> Change the Unicode language to Japanese (thx Lolerskates for this). Some people also tested the game with AppLocale or NTLEA and some times it?s seems to work but with some bugs, like unreadable fonts or no music. Also running the game on the root of C:\ seems to work to some random people. EigoManga version of VP runs without problems on any Windows version.

Every name in this game is in Japanese (Hiragana), who is who?

Characters:

Main character: Yui Kutuna
Girl with magic stick: Haruka Kutuna
Loli grappler: Lilith
Boobs+Guns: Luna Himeki
Loli on yellow clothes: Kurumi Mirumati
Sword girl with blue hair: Saki Mitonoya
Sort-of-Ninja girl with dwelled clothes: Kaede Hioh
Mecha girl: Natalia Glinka
Loli with fighting sticks: Eri Hasumi
Bow girl: Ayane Ikuse
Final Boss: Hilda

Assists:

Magical assist girl: Kanae
Robot assist girl: Ciela
Boxer assist girl: Eko
Ball-and-chain assist girl: Juliet

Has Vanguard Princess "Online Mode"?

Yes, you have two options:

MTSP: A netplay code made in Japan for any Fighting Maker 2nd game. It is now the best option for most people.

Download (English version)

LunaPort: A netplay code for Vanguard Princess. It was the only option for a long time, now obsolete for most people.

Official Site
Download (version R49)

Has Vanguard Princess "Training Mode"?

There is a new mode to enter to Practice Mode since 1.07, you need to press E in VS. Mode, as far as i know.

Is there a hitbox display mode?

Sort of: You need to edit the game.ini parameter "Editor.TestPlay.HitJudge=0", change 0 to 1. Thanks Rikimtasu for this.

The soundtrack is awesome! where i can get it?

Here (Thx lipucd for this rip!)

Is there are more info about the game or characters somewhere?

Yup:

- Mizuumi has a Wiki for the game, there are command list, combos and more poverty stuff.
- There is also a Japanese Wiki for Vanguard Princess (thx Esker for the news).
- Also, just in case, there is a Wikipedia entry about the game.

A Litany of Hate: What Makes Us Survive (Remembering Sam Sanders)

Last week my M:TG community buried one of our own. Sam Sanders was in an accident on some road in Greer, Arizona. The details get iffy after this. Hows and whys got lost amongst the shock and tears of the sudden passing. It seems unfortunately appropriate that my best friend and I found out in the middle of a tournament. I met him playing competitively, I traveled with him to play competitively, and we even talked shit to each other competitively. This red headed bastard passed away inside a vehicle hundreds of miles away from all the people that cared for him. His death dragged away the last bit of innocence we had. Before this my community could measure life before and after our store closed. Now our history is decidedly marked as before Sam’s death and after. Well…fuck. With Evo a few days away some of you are going ask why talk about an M:TG player in the odd corner of El Paso/Las Cruces. This is an easy answer: because the last place you want to get reacquainted with people is at a funeral.

In two days time, the biggest fighting game tournament on the damn planet will get started. A lot of people are going to get caught in the excitement of the sports storylines. Infiltration winning a second time would be something cool; Chris G winning the big one even though he doesn’t care is also something; Mad KoF vs Bala runback is up there with the last two. The real story behind Evo is the amount of friendships that it has kept alive. For years there have been people who attend Evo exclusively to hang out with online friends or get games in in the “Bring your own console (BYOC)” area with the other three guys that play the same game. This part of Evo has gotten downplayed over the last few years. While it is important for the hobby to crown a champion, it is just as important to keep those bonds alive. Some travel for glory, some travel for competition, some travel to learn and some travel just to meet up with Sam Sanders again.

We get to hear a lot of stories about these games. Whether it is TO drama, player drama, it is always some type of drama. We rarely talk about how powerful we are as a small group. Emotions are intensified with small group. Our drama sometimes is larger because it goes through a lot of people so quickly. Nobody fucks up in this community without a majority of it knowing. Similarly when we laugh, we are laughing just as hard. Our experiences are increased a thousand fold, an unknown maestro directing our energies in different ways simultaneously. We react explosively, a symphony whose sections are playing different parts, rhythms, dynamics which sometimes in time and tune. We are intense.

These amplified emotions make each member’s part that much heightened. When Sam died, we all knew which instrument was gone forever. There was no more mean shit talking, no more great player and no more light hearted laughter. That’s one L we hold way to close to our chest and too heavy on our arms. Because it wasn’t just that he did all that. It’s that part of the M:TG community which greeted me when I came to the U.S., was there when I graduated high school, took me on my first road trip, titty bar, got me drunk on my 21st, and when was there to make the end of one shitty week that much better is gone for good. Sam wasn’t there for some of those, but the community was.

Losing elements of that community just makes the sound much smaller. The community doesn’t need an incentive to help its members, we just do. When one of our own lost his mother, we were there. When one of our own had a bad break up, we were there. When my wife had brain surgery, they were there. Tough time finding a job, house set on fire, moving to a new place, or just having a really shitty day, and we’ll be there.

Sometimes we don’t make that connection. There are times where the fighting game portion gets overshadowed by the community part. Nothing has ever stopped time or life from happening. So when life happens, it happens when you’re with a group of people who share something with you; whether slinging cards or throwing hadoukens. When life happens, this community will have your back. These games rotate faster than you realize. Four years ago Daigo won Vanilla SF4, two years before that Dreamcasts were an Evo console and longer than that it was just a bunch of friends in some arcades. Throughout each of those changes, the friendships have endured, the community endured. From time to time the maestro keeps us in line and we all play in unison. The rest of the time we argue about who is offkey, offtime, playing the wrong piece, the wrong game or playing on the wrong console.

While you’re at Evo, say hi to somebody. Go to the BYOC section and play some games. We are single handedly one of the easiest communities to get into: all you need to say is “Can I get next?” Whether or not you endure is dependent on you. I won’t make any promises about the likability of anybody in your local community. A lot of us aren’t perfect, some of us are scumbag and some are insufferable twats. While a few assholes exist, as a whole we are helpful and incredibly tight. If you want to learn we will help and when you are having a shitty day we will help some more. Hang out with your local crew and do something dumb, greet some friends and make some memories; find the people for your character’s subforum and kick it with them, talk some shit, make a bet or two. Strengthen the bonds that keep us together. Video game media will focus on the champions but hardly ever on the real winners. It will never talk about those friends that said hi to each other again, sitting down for games with the guy you haven’t seen since 05.

There’s more to Sam’s death than just telling people to make connections. To some extent I feel a bit of survivor’s guilt: the man was such a positive person that my faults are amplified. I could be a better person but I fail. But while you walk through Evo, don’t miss a chance to just hang out. My community had to lose Sam in a fucked up way. The OG SRK community had to lose Dasrik and MummyB. I can put some damn good money on the fact that nobody regrets those friendships…even if they lead to an eventual loss. My M:TG got a reality check: we are not letting ourselves get out of touch anymore. Don't go out of touch: Go play, connect, have fun, get mad, make friendships, make friendships survive...because when the community grows and endures, the symphony plays louder.

Samuel Patrick Sanders, this one's for you.

Ken vs Gief

Ken vs Gief is a three part street fighter video, created mostly using The Street fighter EX2+ replay function. In it, I've tried to dipict the story of a big ass fight between Ken and Zangief. There's no dialog but it's easy to understand what's going on (Mainly because there's not a lot going on). To break things up a bit there's also lots and lots of combos in there too, from many different SF games inc. 3s, HyperZero, HyperSF, SF Collection, SF: movie and of course SFEX2.

I've been working on it for faaaaar too long but I just finished the last episode and it's all here for your viewing displeasure.

You can download them from combovideos.com.
